Sexuality, taboo and defiance intersect in the house of Scorpio. This can lead to some wonderful, hot, unregrettable escapades. But could it also be the force behind alternative sexuality?

Could the 8th house, the sign of Scorpio and Scorpio’s rulers Pluto and Mars be implicated in bisexuality or homosexuality?

Traditionally, when astrologers have debated what Zodiac energy influences alternative sexuality, it comes down to whether Venus, the planet of attraction, has a strong link to planets and signs who are boundary blind.

The possibilities include: Neptune and Pisces, which idealistically ignore and merge beyond boundaries; Uranus and Pluto, who hate and reject boundaries in social protest; and Pluto and Scorpio who are nonchalant and dismissive of boundaries because no one tells them with to do.

Mercury-ruled Gemini doesn’t have boundary drama, but because it merges yin and yang and can freely access both male and female energy, is also considered a sign that could fuel alternative sexuality.

A snapshot of astrologers’ views of alternative sexuality over the years.

Father of Western Astrology, Claudius Ptolemy (2nd Century A.D.), hypothesized that ”Mars and Venus in masculine signs can make a woman a lesbian” and if a man’s Jupiter and Venus preceded the Sun and made an aspect to Mars, the man “will be attracted to other males.”

James R. Lewis, who wrote “The Astrology Book: Encyclopedia of Heavenly Influences”, reported that according to 20th century Astrologer Charles Carter, a badly aspected Uranus that made contact to Venus would cause a person to be homosexual.

Wim van Dam noted in 1985 in his book“Astrology and Homosexuality: “Most astrologers believe that Uranus and Neptune are particularly liable to cause homosexual behavior .. when in opposition with Taurus and Scorpio.” Dam also said an ominously-aspected Uranus could create homosexual tendencies all by itself.

Contemporary astrologer Stephen Arroyo’s book “Astrology, Karma and Transformation” states his belief that Pluto, Neptune or Uranus, when linked inharmoniously to Venus, creates a predisposition toward homosexuality, as does tense aspects between Mars and Uranus or Mars and Neptune.

Vivian E. Robson, who wrote “Astrology & Sex” in 2005, theorized that homosexuality was a function of the mind (Mercury), emotions (Moon) and societal rules (Saturn). She suggested that when any of the those three planets — Mercury, Moon and Saturn– had squares or opposition to Neptune and Uranus, homosexuality was possible. Furthermore, when the Moon and Mercury squared one another and one of them resided in the house associated with Neptune (the 12th house), homosexuality was likely.

Jeanne Avery in her 2004 book, Astrological Aspects, linked homosexuality to Pluto, saying Pluto, in certain aspects, made a person want to “thumb his nose” at society.

Social History

In the case of Uranus-ruled Aquarius, this 11th sign of the Zodiac loves freedom and universal love without sexual or gender boundaries. Such a Uranian philosophy has given the world androgyny and eccentric sexual attractions for centuries, particularly when linked to the Ascendant or Mars — as Napoleon, who had Uranus in his 7th house, opposite Scorpio Ascendant and trine his Mars would attest. According to author Sir. Richard Burton, Napoleon had the affection of many women and also one of his male generals. Modern dictionaries, such at the Oxford Dictionary (cited below), pay homage to this idea of Uranus influencing sexuality in their description of the word “Uranian.”

Uranian folks did give us the 1960′s “Age of Aquarius” era that gave birth to hippies who gave love freely to whoever, whenever. That era and its resulting “Sexual Revolution,” interestingly enough, fell during the the Scorpio sub-age , providing more evidence that Scorpio energy is linked to overriding of sexual restrictions and creating a free-form hedonistic environment.

Eighth house Sun Julius Caesar swung both ways, according to the book “Astrology and Sex” And modern Scorpios Ru Paul and Frank Ocean have their own alternatieve approaches to sex. That means little, really, since one can make the case for homosexuality being found in all signs of the Zodiac.

Despite the various books and written opinions, Scorpio and Pluto don’t seem in reality to dominate expressions of homosexuality or bisexuality, although anecdotally Aquarius and Uranus sure seem to. Some astrologists believe that it’s useless to look at one sign or planet because it takes many, many aspects and placements to align before one is predisposed to alternative sexuality. A few believe astrology can’t predict the occurence at all.

An Argument for Scorpio as Pansexual:

In the end, while a preponderance of Scorpio and Pluto aspects in the chart might not precipate alternative sexuality, Scorpios are beyond having physical templates for sex. Scorpios are experimental sexual creatures who will try anything. Sex is Scorpio’s response mechanism to the world. As said before on ScorpioLand, Scorpio sexuality is a 7th sense, used to receive and exchange unspeakable knowledge between souls while in the heights of passion.

The physical realm is only of secondary interest to Scorpio. Scorpio’s opposite sign Taurus, approaches sex from the physical dimension, but Scorpio provides the counter-balance. Scorpios do not approach sex from the body inward, but via the reverse method. An emotional yoke, a sense of parallel lives, a comforting aura of kinship, a dare, a desire to conquer, a desire to rebel, the need to connect, the compulsion to be aggressive in a sexualized frenzy can make ANYONE a potential lover for Scorpio. None of these things have to do with genitalia, which, forScorpio, may be just an arbitrary attachment to the person he or she has chosen to bed.

Scorpios and other Plutonians are sexual beings period. They can be sitting in a church or a funeral and have their bodies coursing with sexual impulses; that’s how little codes of conduct matter to them. There is really nothing more to be said. They do not linger on discriminations when there is sex to be had. They have sex with whomever they want — and often without restriction.

Scorpios can sexualize anything… any ritual, any custom, any object, and person, any image, probably any animal and any experience. It’s a gift and it is why Scorpio is associated with all things taboo, including any and all manners of sexual taboos. The Scorpio ethos can make the case for all sexual energy being a neutral power that is simply a force to be directed at will. In that vein, Scorpionic people can really be thought of as pansexuals, but they likely would prefer no definition at all.

Scorpios & Alternative Sexuality: Your Thoughts

Pluto and Scorpio are strong factors in bisexuality and homosexuality

Scorpios are simply hyper-sexual and will screw anyone

Uranus and Neptune indicate homosexuality & bisexuality; Pluto is not a factor.
